Cookbook Migration WPForms

Switch from Contact Form 7 to WPForms with AI

WPForms' importer moves the forms; the AI finds every Contact Form 7 embed across your site and swaps them page by page, verifying each.

Difficulty Intermediate
Time ~20 min
Tools run_ability, run_wp_cli, rest_api

Prerequisites

A connected site with both plugins active during the switch, and WPForms' Contact Form 7 import already run (WPForms > Tools > Import). Take a backup first; this edits multiple live pages.

The prompt
I have imported my Contact Form 7 forms into WPForms using the built-in importer (WPForms > Tools > Import). Now finish the switch. First list my WPForms forms and my Contact Form 7 forms and show me the match between them; ask me about any you cannot match confidently, and if a Contact Form 7 form has no WPForms counterpart at all, skip its pages, list them separately, and tell me to run the importer again for that form. Then find every Contact Form 7 embed across published content: "[contact-form-7]" shortcodes (both numeric and hash style IDs), Contact Form 7 blocks, and embeds inside page builder data such as Elementor. Show me the list of pages you will change and wait for my confirmation. Swap each embed for the matching WPForms form one page at a time, and after each page fetch it and confirm the WPForms form renders and the old form is gone (Contact Form 7 stylesheets will still load while the plugin is active; that is expected, check for the form itself). Do not deactivate or delete Contact Form 7; I will do that myself after checking the pages. Finish with a table of every page changed with its link, and remind me to spot-check the imported forms notification recipients in WPForms and send a test submission.

Skip the copy-paste. Just ask your AI for the “Switch from Contact Form 7 to WPForms with AI” recipe, or describe the task, and WPVibe runs these steps on your own site.

You want off Contact Form 7, but the forms are wired into pages all over the site, and the part you cannot see is the part that bites: which pages embed which form, and whether the replacements actually render everywhere once you switch.

The importer half is already solved: WPForms ships a Contact Form 7 importer that carries over your fields and notification settings in one screen, and its import summary flags anything it could not carry, which is why you spot-check afterward. What it does not do is touch your pages. That is the AI’s half: it inventories every Contact Form 7 embed across your content, including page builder data, matches each to the imported WPForms form, swaps the embeds one page at a time, and fetches each page afterward to confirm the new form renders.

Run the import first (WPForms, then Tools, then Import, pick Contact Form 7), then paste the prompt. Contact Form 7 stays installed and untouched until you have clicked through the swapped pages yourself; deactivate it in wp-admin once you are satisfied. Spot-check the imported forms’ notification addresses in WPForms, and send one test submission per important form.

Outcome

Every Contact Form 7 embed replaced with its WPForms equivalent, each page verified rendering, with Contact Form 7 left installed until you confirm and deactivate it.
