Manage BackWPup with AI

Connect BackWPup to Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI assistant with WPVibe. Check that your backups really ran, take a full backup before every update, and find out why one failed, by asking in plain English.

400,000+ active installs 5 verified abilities Last verified Oct 21, 2026

What your AI can do with BackWPup

One connection gives your assistant structured, permission-checked access to the whole site.

Check your backups

Which jobs run on a schedule and really fire, when the last complete backup ran, whether its log is free of errors, and what went wrong with the rest.

Backup before every update

A full backup started on your yes, checked until it finishes and checked for errors before the AI touches a plugin or theme.

Why a backup failed

The log read for you: where it stopped, each error in plain words, and the fix to make in BackWPup.

Stuck backups

Whether a running backup is still moving, and a stop on your yes so the next one can run.

Things to ask

Paste any of these into Claude or ChatGPT once BackWPup is connected.

“Check my BackWPup backups. When did the last complete one run, and does it include the site files?”
“Before you update WooCommerce, take a full BackWPup backup and wait until it finishes.”
“Last night's BackWPup backup failed. Read the log and tell me why.”
“My BackWPup backup has been running for an hour. Is it stuck?”

Up and running in three steps

1

Install WPVibe

Add the free WPVibe plugin from WordPress.org to the site running BackWPup.

2

Connect your AI

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and more. One click to authorize, and no passwords ever go in the chat.

3

Ask in plain English

“Before you update WooCommerce, take a full BackWPup backup and wait until it finishes.”

Verified BackWPup recipes

Copy-paste playbooks, each one tested on a live BackWPup install before it ships.

Every BackWPup ability

BackWPup registers these with the WordPress Abilities API under the backwpup namespace. Your AI finds them with discover_abilities and calls them with run_ability. WPVibe asks for your approval only when an ability is marked destructive and deletes something or runs code; everything else runs as soon as your AI calls it. Verified means we ran it on a live install of v5.7.8. Registered means a fresh install of v5.7.8 ships it and we have not run it yet.

Requires BackWPup 5.7.8 or newer on WordPress 6.9 or newer, with an administrator account. Tested on the free BackWPup 5.7.8. Restoring backups and setting up jobs and schedules stay in BackWPup.

What we learned testing it

Behavior the ability descriptions do not mention.

  • Through WPVibe the AI can start, follow and cancel backups and read their logs. It cannot restore, download or delete a backup, or create a job or change a schedule; those stay in BackWPup. BackWPup's own WP-CLI commands are not among the commands WPVibe runs (tested).
  • Starting and cancelling a backup are not marked destructive, so WPVibe runs them without an approval page. The recipes ask for your yes first.
  • Backup Now saves to BackWPup's folder inside your uploads folder on the same server and keeps the newest 15 there. That helps when an update goes wrong, not when the server is lost; a job that saves to cloud storage covers that.
  • If another plugin offloads your uploads folder to cloud storage, Backup Now's folder can resolve there (seen with Infinite Uploads in our test).
  • BackWPup runs one backup at a time and refuses a second while one runs. A full backup of our 2.4 GB test site took about seven minutes.
  • Run a backup can answer that it could not start even though it did: it checks after one second (seen in our test). The reverse also happens: after a late start, the next run can answer started because of the marker the late one left behind. Follow the history, not the answer.
  • Completed in the history means the archive was saved, not that every part made it: a part that fails is logged as an error and the job carries on. Aborted can mean cancelled or failed. Read the log.
  • The jobs list leaves out temporary jobs. On a fresh install the first job BackWPup's setup creates was one of them, so the list came back empty.
  • The jobs list does not say what a job backs up, but every backup file name ends with what its job was set to include: DBDUMP is the database, FILE the site files, WPPLUGIN a list of plugins.
  • History times are when a backup started, in UTC. The jobs list's last run is in the site's local time.

Verified, and kept that way

Works with AI is WPVibe’s verification program. Every ability marked verified was run on a live BackWPup install, and we rescan WordPress.org weekly so a release that adds or removes abilities shows up here before it surprises you.
